Description:
The Department of Medicine with joint recruitment from the Divisions of Palliative Care and the Division of Neurology at the University of Ottawa and The Ottawa Hospital (TOH) is looking for a NeuroPalliative Care Neurologist to join our team July 2025.

Responsibilities:
The successful candidate will participate in NeuroPalliative outpatient clinics at least 0.5 days/week depending on clinical demand. Through the Division of Palliative Care, the successful candidate will attend as staff on the inpatient consult service, inpatient Palliative Care Units, and the Regional Palliative Care Team. The successful candidate will additionally join the Division of Neurology and work across all sites of The Ottawa Hospital. The individual will conduct a General Neurology outpatient clinic 0.5 days/ week. The relative full-time contribution will be 0.80 FTE to Palliative Care and 0.2 FTE will be devoted to Neurology.

Additional Neurology duties would include: 1) rotation on the neurology inpatient and neurology consultation services; 2) participate in neurology academic activities; 3) teach medical students, residents and fellows in outpatient and inpatient settings; and 4) participate in the neurology on-call rotation on a regular basis. 

The successful candidate is expected to participate in a variety of clinical duties as well as education and academic opportunities and initiatives at the University of Ottawa. This position works under the general direction of the Heads of the Divisions of Palliative Care and Neurology, Department of Medicine at The Ottawa Hospital/University of Ottawa.

Qualifications:
The ideal candidate will be a neurologist with a minimum of one year of fellowship training in Palliative Care. 
The successful candidate must hold an MD degree; be a member of, or be eligible to be a member of, the Canadian Medical Protective Association; have, or be eligible for certification in neurology by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, and have, or be eligible for, licensure in Ontario. The successful applicant will be eligible to hold an academic appointment at the rank of an Assistant Professor or higher at the University of Ottawa within the Department of Medicine. Academic rank will be commensurate with the candidate’s qualifications and experience.

The University of Ottawa and The Ottawa Hospital are bilingual institutions and therefore in the case of potentially successful candidates of equal ability, a bilingual (French/English) candidate would be preferred.

Additional Information:
The University of Ottawa’s Division of Palliative Care includes approximately 45 physicians, covering four hospitals and the Regional Palliative Consultation Team, including more than 4500 new consultations per year, in a catchment area of 1.3 million people in Eastern Ontario, Quebec and Nunavut.  The research group is leading dozens of funded programs of research. In the past five years, our division members have been principal investigators on > 110 peer-reviewed grants worth more than $40 million, producing more than 300 publications.

The Division of Neurology has approximately 40 Neurologists and is renowned for delivery of outstanding care and recognized internationally for its programs, including neuromuscular, MS, neuro ophthalmology, movement disorders, epilepsy and stroke. Members of the Division have a wide range of clinical and basic science research skills. Their work includes cutting edge clinical trials, translational research, and epidemiology. In addition to modern out-patient clinical units, the Division has a 20 bed inpatient general neurology unit, 24 bed stroke inpatient unit and consult services at both the Civic and General campuses of The Ottawa Hospital.

The Ottawa Hospital is a 1150 bed tertiary-care hospital serving Eastern Ontario and Western Quebec at four inpatient sites (Civic, General, Heart Institute, and the Rehabilitation Centre) and one ambulatory centre (Riverside).  There are approximately 50,000 inpatient admissions, 160,000 emergency visits and over one million outpatient visits annually.

Ground-breaking medical research is conducted through The Ottawa Hospital Research Institute (OHRI) and the University of Ottawa Heart Institute. We rank 5th in Canada for competitive, peer-reviewed grants from the prestigious Canadian Institutes of Health Research. Over 2,300 researchers are publishing more than 2,200 studies yearly, with hundreds being high-impact publications (top 10% or citations).

The Department of Medicine is a research-intensive Department. Members currently hold 25 University Research Chairs. The Department receives approximately $60 million per year in external research funding and members publish approximately 1200 peer-reviewed publications annually.

Terms of Employment:
The income for this position is derived from a variety of sources including but not limited to clinical billings (fee-for-service), salary support (AFP) as well as honorariums/stipends.
