Position Profile:
The Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry, Western University, London Health  Sciences Centre (LHSC) and St. Joseph’s Health Care London (St. Joseph’s), invite applications for the position of Chair/Department Head of the Department of Anesthesia & Perioperative Medicine. The  successful candidate will hold a full-time continuing Clinical Academic appointment at the rank of  Associate or Full Professor. The Chair/Department Head position will have an initial five-year term,  normally renewable once, and is subject to a mid-term review. Academic rank will be based on  qualifications and experience.  

Academic and/or Clinical Expectations:

  • Provide the vision to expand on the department’s strengths of integrating teaching, research and  current evidence into clinical practice in partnership with the University, the affiliated research  institutes and both academic hospital organizations.  
  • Be a strong leader, administrator and communicator, with the ability to advocate for the department’s mission and goals alongside partners and the community.  
  • Provide responsible and accountable clinical academic leadership within the University and both  hospital organizations.  
  • Be prepared to work collaboratively with basic and clinical scientists to build innovative, integrated and translational research identified as signature areas in the strategic plans of Western University and Schulich School of Medicine and Dentistry, as well as both hospital organizations.  

Qualifications or Experience and Skills Required: The successful candidate must be an accomplished clinician with an MD or equivalent, be eligible to be certified as a member of the Royal College of  Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, and eligible for College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario  registration for licensure in the Province of Ontario.  

An established track record of research productivity, leadership experience in research, and relevant  educational qualifications would be an asset. 

Compensation Details: Compensation will be based on qualifications and experience and will be composed primarily of the following sources: fee for service, alternate funding plan, and academic support.

About the Department: The Department of Anesthesia & Perioperative Medicine provides integral  support to the clinical campuses of London Health Sciences Center (University Hospital, Victoria Hospital, Children’s Hospital) and St. Joseph’s Health Care. The Department provides the spectrum of medical  care from conducting preoperative assessment to performing the most advanced life-supporting  techniques in all perioperative settings such as ambulatory surgery, subspecialty surgery, obstetric,  pediatric care, out-of-OR interventional procedures, acute and chronic pain management, palliative care, blood conservation management, post-anesthetic care unit, cardiac surgery recovery unit and intensive care units. The faculty are international leaders in their fields of cardiac anesthesia, neuroanesthesia,  obstetric care and perioperative care. The Woman’s care program at Victoria hospital was the first in  Canada to be designated as a Center of Excellence by the Society for Obstetric Anesthesia and  Perinatology for providing effective and evidence-based obstetric anesthesia care. The Department is  also responsible for undergraduate and post-graduate anesthesia and pain medicine residency programs, and subspecialty anesthesia fellowship programs in the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry. The  Department currently has 89 faculty, 46 residents and 20 clinical fellows to provide patient-centered  quality care, providing clinical service to over 40 operating rooms daily (37,000 surgical procedures per annum) at both London Health Sciences Centre (LHSC) University Hospital and Victoria Hospital, and St. Joseph’s Health Care London.
