Mushkiki Miikan – Pathway to Medicine

The Mushkiki Miikan project aims to comprehensively support Indigenous learners in pursuing medical education by developing pathways in collaboration with Ontario medical schools. This project is led by the Northern Ontario School of Medicine University (NOSM University), University of Toronto Temerty Faculty of Medicine (Temerty Medicine), Queen’s University and Toronto Metropolitan University. The overarching goal is to increase access, provide tailored assistance, and foster a supportive environment for Indigenous learners throughout their medical education journey.

Indigenous students exploring or planning a career in medicine are encouraged to visit the university websites of those they are interested in. There are 17 medical schools across Canada:

In addition to Canada’s 17 established medical schools, several new institutions are in development to address the growing demand for medical education:

Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) School of Medicine – September 2025

University of Prince Edward Island (UPEI) Faculty of Medicine – 2025

Simon Fraser University (SFU) Medical School – 2026

York University School of Medicine – 2028

Once accepted into medical school, please consider becoming an Indigenous Medical Student Member here at IPAC. As a member you would be provided with opportunities for mentorship, networking, professional development, collaboration and more.
