Chair/Head Department of Emergency Medicine

Work Location: Ottawa, Ontario
Duration:  Up to 5 years, renewable once
Compensation: Compensation will be aligned with FoM and TOH guidelines for administrative stipends
Time Allocation: 3.5 days per week

The Department of Emergency Medicine’s (DEM) mission is to provide outstanding compassionate emergency care through practice-changing research and innovative medical education. Their goal to excel in giving the highest quality teaching to our learners, affording them an exceptional education, and training them to be outstanding clinicians, academics and leaders of tomorrow in Emergency Medicine is apparent in all of the departmental activities. Through impactful research, we strive to improve the quality and safety of emergency care for our patients locally and world-wide, the type of care we would want for our loved ones. 

The Department is comprised of 130 dynamic faculty members who work across the region providing care to our communities. Our services are offered in both official languages.

The successful individual will lead the Department of Emergency Medicine with its:

  • National and international leaders in clinical care, education and research;
  • Affiliations and partnerships with CHEO, University of Ottawa Heart Institute, Hôpital Montfort, and other regional partners; 
  • Undergraduate, postgraduate, and fellowship training programs as well as its commitment to graduate and postdoctoral training; 
  • Drive to uphold the principles of equity, diversity and inclusion and anti-Indigenous racism
  • Commitment to safety, quality and system improvement.

Qualifications:
You meet the following qualifications: 

  • A seasoned leader who can direct the effective delivery of clinical services, academic performance and research in alignment with the mission, vision, values, policies and objectives of the FoM and TOH; 
  • Demonstrated experience in engaging teams and leading change; 
  • Excellent administrative and organizational skills; 
  • Experience to promote and sustain innovation and collaborative partnerships; 
  • An outstanding record in patient care, teaching, academic leadership and research; 
  • Accomplished physician who is in good standing with the FRCPC, CCPF-EM or equivalent;
  • Candidates must be eligible for an academic appointment at the level of associate or full professor; 
  • Eligibility for medical licensure in Ontario; and
  • Fluency in English or French (the university’s official languages) and a minimum of a passive knowledge of the other is required.
