The School of Medicine and Faculty of Health at York University invites highly qualified applicants for a Clinical Associate or Clinical Full Professor position to commence March 1, 2026. The successful candidate will be appointed as Associate Dean, Indigenous Health with an initial 3-year term, with the possibility of renewal. This is a Clinical Faculty Appointment in the Clinical Professorial stream, as described in the University’s Clinical Faculty Appointments Policy. The successful candidate will identify a home department to be appointed (i.e., Family Medicine, Paediatrics, Obstetrics & Gynecology, Surgery, Psychiatry, Community & Population Health & Health Systems Transformation, Anesthesia, Medical Imaging, Pathology, Diagnostics, Laboratory Medicine) in the School of Medicine or a joint appointment across two departments.
The Associate Dean, Indigenous Health (AD-IH) is a critical member of Faculty of Health (FOH) leadership team that fosters a culture of collaboration, community & social accountability, excellence, professionalism, continuous improvement, lifelong learning and innovation. The AD-IH is the senior leader within the FOH who guides collaborative processes to establish and build the principles and values that steer the FOH and the way in which it will engage with First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Peoples and uphold Indigenous cultures, knowledges, processes and ways of working. The AD-IH plays an essential role in conceptualizing, guiding and advancing Indigenous health, knowledge systems, and perspectives across the FOH, with an initial focus in the School of Medicine (SOM).
We seek a colleague whose scholarship is informed by Indigenous knowledges and perspectives. They may apply these to any field of study related to people’s health and wellness.
The Associate Dean, Indigenous Health (AD-IH) reports to the Dean of the FOH, and will work closely with the Dean, and Associate Dean, Faculty Affairs and Inclusivity in the FOH, and the Chairs/Directors across the Faculty’s Schools and Department. Within the SOM, the AD-IH will work closely with the Vice Deans, Associate Deans, and Department Heads.
This opportunity is limited to applicants who identify as Indigenous (First Nations, Inuit, & Métis). The successful candidate will be required to take part in the Indigenous People Belonging and Verification Procedure once established. Candidate Qualifications:
- Degree: MD or equivalent degree (e.g. MBBS, MDCM, MDchB, DO), and eligibility to hold a licence to practice medicine in Ontario preferred (clinical faculty).
- Scholarship:
o A coherent program of research and/or professional practice in an area related to Indigenous health and wellness.
Teaching:
o A record or promise of excellence in teaching and dedication to students (e.g., such as the creation and/or delivery of Indigenous health and wellness curricula, pedagogical innovations, student and peer evaluations).
o Suitability for prompt appointment to the Faculty of Graduate Studies, given that the position may involve graduate teaching and supervision. - Additional:
o Minimum of five (5) years of leadership experience in academic, medicine, or healthcare organizations.
o Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of Indigenous cultural identities and values (First Nations, Inuit and Métis) is required.
o Demonstrated experience in community engagement and partnership development with Indigenous Communities and/or Indigenous healthcare organizations.
